Back to the… past September 11, 2007

Hallo my dears,
today I was not thinking about Michael J. Fox and the movie back to the Future (and don’t worry I won’t post any song from “Huey Lewis and the News”). I was just thinking to make a small chronological history of the indie music moving from Arctic Monkeys back to the past.
Incidentally, I was wondering “which band can be considered the Next-Big-Thing (an US or UK expression to define the hype of the moment) in the indie music world before the Arctic Monkeys?”.
I found the answer can only be one: “the Bloc Party“!
The band named Bloc Party is composed of 4 British guys leaded by the vocalist and guitar Kele Okereke. Their first album Silent Alarm was released a couple of years ago and it reached the top-charts all over Europe and America. The most known track “Helicopter” was also used as soundtrack for several video-games (!) while the whole album was so highly considered to be remixed by different bands and DJs (like Mogway, Four Tet, Whitey, etc.) and it resulted in the album “Silent Alarm Remixed”.
While the second album “A Weekend in the City” has been recently released, today I want to post a track from Silent Alarm, “So Here We Are”, that I consider to be one of my favourites:
Enjoy the rhythm and the wonderful voice of Sir. Okereke.
Ciao, Domenico
bloc party, which party? and why not huey lewis etc? the power of love was such a cute song!
lyrics for the song of today, carina by the way, fa’ un po’ il verso ai cure
So Here We Are
I caught a glimpse, but its been forgotten
So here we are again
I made a vow, to carry you home… home
I really tried to do what you wanted
It all went wrong again
I made a vow, to carry you home
If you fall sick, if you pass out
I figured it out, I can see again
Still waiting to have a copy of Silent Alarm Remixed !!!
I actually agree with Gio… why not H.L.&t.N??? they were great!! remember his shirt in the video??? OMG! and the haircut? Jeezzzz….
I actually have a question..Pisty-boy…
would you define this group as an Indie group? is this an Indie style?
I m not quite sure….
ok, let s put it th other way round…
define “INDIE”….
xxxj
Well, today it’s difficult to make a difference between what is and what is not “indie”. Since the majors have found in the so-called indipendent music a source for business (that’s happened since the end of the ‘90) this kind of music has lost its flavour. Today we have “indie majors” that are better than the others from a certain point of view (e.g. Fugazi’s Dischord Records) but the image of a band playing in their garage and selling the CDs just at the concerts is rare.
Wrapping it up, from a pure point of view, Bloc Party are not indie at all. From a practical point of view, they are more indie than Britney Spears or other similar mainstreams… but the most indie band that I know is….
Huey Lewis and The News!!!!
Lot of love,
Domenico
