Electro-Pop February 27, 2009

OK, let’s finish the Kairn’s week with the usual dancing thing as (almost) for (all) the other Fridays. I hope you liked this initiatve of mine to post things (that I will screen) suggested by a friend of mine and I invite you all for the last time to suggest something too.

Well, today we end the week with the Hot Chip.

We are talking about a British electro-pop band. Sometimes it’s so funny how the musical critics can invent new terms for the music they try to (or have to) catalogue. Therefore, when we talk about “Electropop” we can refer to the wiki definition of:

“a form of electronic music that is made with synthesizers, and which first flourished from 1978 to 1981.
Electropop is characterised by a cold, robotic, emphasized electronic sound, which was largely due to the early limitations of the analog synthesizers used to make the music. It often features alienated deadpan lyrics with a futuristic sci-fi edge.”

Let’s see if the definition itself matches with the song I’m going to publish today, that is “Over and Over”:

Have a great weekend, Domenico

And here we go with another round of music suggested by Karin. As you would have seen, I decided to take a week and post things from her. Then, as I wrote in a previous page, I’m open for suggestions (send them by e-mail) from other of you, my good friends and fellows!

Today we talk about a band we already mentioned in another post, when we talked about “The Libertines”. We will deal with the Babyshambles.

As some of you would know, this London’s indie rock band was formed by Pete Doherty during a hiatus from the mentioned band The Libertines (actually he’s was just banned from playing with The Libertines, due to his problems in substance abuse), but Babyshambles has since become his main project. Babyshambles has released two albums, one EP and a number of singles. The band has received a great deal of attention from the British tabloid press as a result of interest in Doherty’s personal life (I know, as I said somewhere else, it’s so bad that the tabloid’s echo from the life of a junkie does influence the quality of the music).

But, in the end, we don’t care too much and we just want to listen to some music. That’s why we are going to listen to the song “Delivery”:

They can say No! February 25, 2009

As they say in sport, “if you win, you don’t change the team!” (Well, I’m not sure about the sentence but the concept is the one I wanted to express!). Therefore, today we will continue the tradition started with posting a band or an artist proposed by Karin. Yes, my dears, this girl knows some bands that I don’t know and that proves that I’m losing the pace and not improving and searching and discovering new things… but time is time and I have not so much recently.

Then today we talk about the band Veto.

This Danish band plays rock music very likely to the most famous Bloc Party (or at least the Bloc Party at the time of their first album). While they’re quite famous in their home country (In February 2007, they won the award for Best New Act, as well as Best Danish Music Video at Danish Music Awards), as I said, I’ve never heard anything from them until today.

But now that I listened to some of their tracks, I can choose between them and this time I won’t publich the one suggested by Karin but the following one, that is “You are a Knife” (not only because we talked about the band “The Knife” in the Monday’s POST but because I like this song):

I like the idea of keep posting things suggested by my friend Karin. I found she has some good stuff that I haven’t heard before. And moreover, I invite you all to send me suggestions (via e-mail) for things you would like to listen on this BLOG. Of course, as I have done in the past, only some of your suggestions will be posted or maybe I will select the artist/band and will choose a different song. Let’s try this thing and see how it goes.

So, today we have the Antennas.

Again an unknown band from my friend. Again I have to learn more about them. And I won’t write anything about them so that if you’re interested, then you go and check on their website. The only thing I can say is they will play live in a month or so (26th March), here in Vienna at B72 but I won’t be here at that time.

So, let’s listen to today’s song, that is “Always On My Mind”:

Ciao belli and belle. Let’s start the last week of this short month. February always reminds me of those things left unattended. Like when you study for the next day’s oral test and you reach the end of what you are supposed to learn or repeat. And you see the last paragraph, the last page or even the last rows of the it and you think… they will never ask me this part… and sometimes it happens. February is like an uncompleted lesson to learn.

About the music, today we have something suggested to me by Karin that I thank and gift with the song she chose from the ones released by Fever Ray.

As I learn from the official website: Fever Ray (real name: Karin Dreijer Andersson) is the formerly singer with ‘90s pop hopes “Honey Is Cool” and now one half of “The Knife”. She took a couple of years off from her bands/projects and returned as a solo artist under a new name.

Then, she’s Swedish, and released three albums widely acclaimed by the music scene. Now she’s about to have the second child but can’t stop writing/playing music/releasing beautiful and intense songs, like the one I’d like to share with you today, that is “When I Grow Up”:

Let’s close this week with something hippy-hoppy-happy.

Let’s talk about the Dead Prez.

This American underground hip hop duo is formed by “stic.man” and “M-1″ (this one seems to be the floor close to the commissary). They are known for their political lyrics and the style combined with socialist and pan-Africanism. They talk about revolution, veganism, institutional racism, critical pedagogy, police, capitalism, education, prison systems, religion, activism against governmental repression, and corporate control over the media, especially hip-hop record labels.

The most famous song that I know from this band is “Hip Hop” and I share that with you, as a right closure for the present week:

Enjoy the weekend.
