Bob Marley’s daughter in law February 9, 2009

Posted by Domenico in Music.

Hi there. Today we start another week of this BLOG. As you would have recognized in my last weekly post, sometimes it’s not so easy to write something or to be enough insired to write something on these pages. Some of you complain, expecting to listen always something good (at least for their ears…). From my point of view, “good things” exist because of the presence of “bad things”. What if everyday you liked everything?! Would it be that boring?

Today we talk about Lauryn Hill.

For the very few of you that don’t know yet anything about Lauryn Noel Hill, she is an American singer, rapper, musician, songwriter, producer, and film actress. She started her career in the hip-hop world as the lone female member of The Fugees. In 1998 she launched her solo career with the release of the commercially successful and critically acclaimed album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The recording earned Hill five Grammy Awards. FYI, Hill is the mother of five children with Rohan Marley, the fourth son of reggae legend Bob Marley.

One of the reasons why I’m posting something about Mrs. Hill comes from the question Julia and I had at the same time, that is, “What happened to Lauryn Hill?” (meaning that I know nothing abou ther since after the release of the debut album). She largely dropped out of public view, in part due to her displeasure with fame and the music industry. After a four-year hiatus, she released MTV Unplugged No. 2.0, a live recording of “deeply personal songs”, played with an acoustic guitar. Hill also participated in a short-lived Fugees reunion during the mid-2000s. A new album should be released soon… but when?

There are several songs from her debut album. One of the songs I like is “Ex-Factor”, that I’m sharing with you today:

I find the woman rather unnerving at times, but this was a good one.

It could all be so simple
But youd rather make it hard
Loving you is like a battle
And we both end up with scars
Tell me, who I have to be
To get some reciprocity see
No one loves you more than me
And no one ever will

Is this just a silly game
That forces you to act this way
Forces you to scream my name
Then pretend that you cant stay
Tell me, who I have to be
To get some reciprocity see
No one loves you more than me
And no one ever will

No matter how I think we grow
You always seem to let me know
It aint workin
It aint workin
And when I try to walk away
Youd hurt yourself to make me stay
This is crazy
This is crazy

I keep letting you back in
How can I explain myself
As painful as this thing has been
I just cant be with no one else
See I know what we got to do
You let go and Ill let go too
cause no ones hurt me more than you
And no one ever will

Repeat hook

Care for me, care for me
I know you care for me

There for me, there for me
Said youd be there for me

Cry for me, cry for me
You said youd die for me

Give to me, give to me
Why wont you live for me
