Another mid-week BLOG. Tonight I’m going to attend some English Theater in Vienna (or at least I should… let’s see how the day goes on) and I’m pretty curious to see how it is. Generally, I like theater very much and the last show I saw in Vienna was the “Vagina’s dialogues” where a friend of a friend of mine was playing one of the monologues. Very funny and sad and deep and a lot of other things. Let’s see tonight how that will go.

Meanwhile, today we talk about the band Cake.

This is a quite old band, that is around since 1991. They come from California. They had their time and released several hits throughout the 1990s and 2000s from their five albums. Cake’s music is often classified as alternative or indie rock but, in a wider view, it combines multiple musical genres, such as funk, ska, pop, jazz, rap, and country (!). Cake’s music features droll lyrics rife with word play and syncopation (laconically voiced in a rap-like style by lead vocalist/guitarist John McCrea), catchy distorted guitar riffs (courtesy of guitarist Greg Brown until 1998, and bass player to Victor Damiani until 1997), and a solo trumpet (played by Vince DiFiore).
Cake’s musical style has been compared to “They Might Be Giants”, “Talking Heads”, “The Cars”, and “Camper Van Beethoven… and I would add also some Beck (I think he could have been influenced by them).

I found one of their first videos, the one for the song “Never There”:

Enjoy it. Domenico

Not bad!

I need your arms around me, I need to feel your touch
I need your understanding, I need your love so much
You tell me that you love me so, you tell me that you care
But when I need you baby, youre never there

On the phone long, long distance
Always through such strong resistance
First you say youre too busy
I wonder if you even miss me

Never there
Youre never there
Youre never, ever, ever, ever there

A golden bird that flies away, a candles fickle flame
To think I held you yesterday, your love was just a game
A golden bird that flies away, a candles fickle flame
To think I held you yesterday, your love was just a game

You tell me that you love me so, you tell me that you care
But when I need you baby
Take the time to get to know me
If you want me why cant you just show me
Were always on this roller coaster
If you want me why cant you get closer?

Never there
Youre never there
Youre never ever ever ever there
