Fusion! May 14, 2009

There are days when I have no info at all about what I’m going to post. Those days are somehow funny and interesting because I can learn something more, discover new music and new artists and this is one of the best parts for me that I write. I hope this is also a good part for you that read. The end of this process can result into something I like or not and sometimes this is different from the concept the I want to post it or not.

Today we have Trilok Gurtu.

I learned that Trilok Gurtu comes from Mumbai and is more than 50 years old! He is a percussionist (from what I’ve been listening to, in a very wide and interesting point of view). Son of a singer (Shobha Gurtu), who initiated him on the tabla, and he later studied the instrument with Abdul Karim (not Jabbar!). Only in the latest 70s, when he started playing the “Western drum kit”, then he became interested in jazz. After more or less 10 years, then he played with John McLaughlin and since almost 20 years he has been a solo artist, sometimes with a band called “Crazy Saints”.

I found a long but nice track from one of his live performances together with Joe Zawinul, that is “Orient Express Part.1”:

This is dedicated to my great friend Andrea, that today celebrates his B-Day.
Auguri, bello, and hope you enjoy the rhythm of the tablas!

Grazie caro, I’m moved!
Thank you thank you thank you
He cooperated with some of the greatest jazz musicians of the last three decades (like Zawinul!).
But if you want to see why he won Best Percussionist Down Beat’s Critics Poll for 1994, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 (possibly the highest award in its genre) and want to see some insane drumming, have a look here:
